Europen Conference of Tropical Ecology

The European Conference on Tropical Ecology is an international scientific event that brings together scientists dedicated to research in tropical ecology, biodiversity conservation, and the sustainability of socio-ecosystems, addressing the main environmental challenges faced in tropical regions.

In 2024, the conference took place over five days in Lisbon, Portugal.

As a consultant for CIFOR-ICRAF, I had the pleasure of presenting a paper on the bushmeat trade in Guyana, sharing research results and learning from different scientific and practical perspectives

It was also very valuable to meet colleagues and references in the field in person, such as Dr. Julia E. Fa (Manchester Metropolitan University - UK), Dr. Martí Orta (University of Barcelona - Spain), Dr. Nathalie van Vliet, Juanita Gomes (SWM-CIFOR - Indonesia), Dr. Naiara Sales (Salford University - UK), and Dr. Filipa Palmeirim (CIBIO - Portugal), strengthening networks of dialogue and collaboration.

I participated in the event as one of the representatives of the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme, a joint initiative of FAO, CIRAD, WCS and CIFOR, funded by the European Commission. The programme seeks to reconcile wildlife conservation and food security, promoting the sustainable and legal use of wildlife by Indigenous populations. Within the programme in Guyana, CIFOR leads actions on sustainable consumption of bushmeat, monitoring and evaluation, in addition to activities developed in Guyana in partnership with local associations.
